8.2.2. How ITIL and PRINCE2 Are Complementary

💡 First Principle: PRINCE2 provides structured project governance for delivering change; ITIL provides service management for the ongoing products and services — the project hands its output into the service lifecycle, and the two govern adjacent, complementary phases of the same value journey.

ITIL and PRINCE2 are complementary across the product and service development lifecycle because they govern adjacent stages. PRINCE2 offers a structured method for managing projects — clear stages, defined roles, controlled risk and scope — which is well-suited to delivering new or significantly changed products and services through the design, acquire, build, and transition activities. ITIL then governs the resulting products and services through operate, deliver, support, and continual improvement. The project (PRINCE2) delivers the change; service management (ITIL) sustains and improves it. Together they cover the full arc from "build the change" to "run and improve it."

⚠️ Exam Trap: PRINCE2 governs the project (a temporary endeavour to deliver change); ITIL governs the ongoing service. They hand off to each other across the lifecycle — neither replaces the other.

Reflection Question: Where in the product and service lifecycle does PRINCE2's role typically hand over to ITIL's, and why?
