5.1.2. Purpose of the ITIL Value System

💡 First Principle: The Value System's purpose is to ensure the organization continually co-creates value with all stakeholders through the use and management of products and services — it exists to make value creation systematic rather than accidental.

The purpose of the ITIL Value System is to describe how all the components and activities of the organization work together as a system to enable value co-creation. It shows how the pieces connect: guiding principles inform every decision, governance keeps the organization aligned and in control, the value chain does the operational work, practices supply the capabilities, and continual improvement keeps it all relevant. The whole point is to convert demand and opportunity into value, reliably, over time.

⚠️ Exam Trap: The Value System describes how components work together — its purpose is integration, not any single activity. An option naming just one function (e.g. "to deliver services") understates it.

Reflection Question: How does the Value System prevent the guiding principles, practices, and improvement efforts from becoming disconnected activities?
