6.3. Purpose of Value Stream Mapping and Management
💡 First Principle: The purpose of value stream mapping and management is to improve flow — making value move faster, more visibly, and with less waste — because flow, not isolated task efficiency, is what the customer ultimately experiences.
Why care: a customer doesn't experience your individual activities; they experience the total journey from request to value. Improving that journey is the entire point of value stream work. The mental model: you map to see the flow, then manage to improve it, measuring the elements that reveal waste and delay.
⚠️ Common Misconception: That mapping and management are interchangeable. Mapping reveals; management acts. The relationship between them is the engine of flow improvement.
