7.1.3. AI Across the Value Chain
💡 First Principle: Beyond the lifecycle, AI can be leveraged across the value chain activities — improving the operating-model work the organization does — so its benefit isn't confined to product development but extends to how value flows.
AI can be leveraged throughout the value chain activities: improving planning with predictive insight, accelerating engagement through intelligent interfaces, enhancing design and transition with automated testing, speeding obtain/build with code generation, and strengthening deliver and support with intelligent monitoring and self-service. The point is breadth — AI is a capability applicable across the organization's value-creating activities, not a single bolt-on.
⚠️ Exam Trap: AI applies across the value chain, paralleling its lifecycle role. Don't treat it as relevant only to technical build activities — its reach spans planning, engagement, delivery, and support too.
Reflection Question: Why does ITIL frame AI as relevant across the whole value chain rather than just in build/operate?
