5.4.1. SNMP Components
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Manager | Queries agents, receives traps |
| Agent | Runs on managed device, responds to queries |
| MIB | Management Information Base (database of objects) |
| OID | Object Identifier: the numeric address of one object in the MIB tree |
Message types: the manager polls with Get (one object), GetNext (the next object in the tree) and GetBulk (SNMPv2c/v3: many objects in one request), and changes a value with Set; the agent answers each with a Response. A Trap is sent by the agent unsolicited when an event occurs, so alerts don't wait for the next poll (an Inform is a trap the manager acknowledges). Polls go to UDP 161, traps to UDP 162.
