3.6.1. Architecture Types
| Architecture | How It Works | Sweet Spot | The Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autonomous | Each AP configured individually | 1-10 APs | Simple setup, management nightmare at scale |
| Controller-based | WLC manages all APs centrally | 10-10,000+ APs | Requires WLC infrastructure, but scales beautifully |
| Cloud-managed | Cloud dashboard manages APs | 5-500 APs | Easy multi-site, but requires internet connectivity |
| Embedded WLC | WLC built into Catalyst switch | 50-200 APs | Great for branches, limited scale |
Why controller-based dominates enterprise: When a security vulnerability is discovered, you patch once on the WLC—not 500 times on individual APs. When you rename the guest network, it's one change. When you add a new SSID, it appears on every AP within minutes. Without centralized control, managing wireless at scale is a full-time job.
