A hypervisor creates and manages virtual machines (VMs), each running its own OS on shared physical hardware.
Type 1 (Bare-metal): Runs directly on hardware (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V) Type 2 (Hosted): Runs on top of an OS (VMware Workstation, VirtualBox)
