2.13.4. MAC Address Table
The MAC address table (also called CAM table) maps MAC addresses to switch ports.
| Entry Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic | Learned from incoming frames | Normal operation |
| Static | Manually configured; never ages out | Security purposes |
Switch# show mac address-table dynamic
Switch# show mac address-table address 0011.2233.4455
Switch# show mac address-table interface Gi0/1
Don't confuse the MAC table with the ARP table (show ip arp on a router or Layer 3 switch), which maps IP addresses to MAC addresses. An ARP entry showing Incomplete means an ARP request was sent but no reply came back—the host is down, unreachable at Layer 2, or the address isn't in use.
