2.2.4. WAN Topologies

WAN connects geographically separated sites. Common topologies:

  • Point-to-point: Direct link between two sites
  • Hub-and-spoke: Central site connects to all branch sites
  • Full mesh: Every site connects to every other site—maximum redundancy, but n sites need n(n−1)/2 links, so cost and complexity grow quickly as sites are added
  • Partial mesh: Some direct connections, others through hubs
