Diagram Types:
| Type | Shows | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Actual device locations, cable runs | Installation, maintenance, "where is it?" |
| Logical | IP addresses, VLANs, subnets, routing | Configuration, troubleshooting |
| Rack diagram | Equipment placement in racks | Data center management, planning |
| Cable map | Cable routes and terminations | Adds/moves/changes, troubleshooting |
| Layer 1/2/3 diagram | Network at specific OSI layer | Design, layer-specific troubleshooting |
Asset Inventory:
- Hardware: Serial numbers, locations, warranty dates, maintenance contracts
- Software: Versions, licenses, support status
- Licensing: Compliance tracking, renewal dates
- Warranty: Coverage periods, support contacts, replacement SLAs
IPAM (IP Address Management): Tracks IP address allocation across the network. Prevents conflicts, identifies available addresses, maintains DNS/DHCP integration.
SLA (Service Level Agreement): Defines expected service levels—uptime percentage, response times, recovery objectives. Basis for measuring network performance and holding providers accountable.
Wireless Survey/Heat Map: Shows signal strength across physical areas. Identifies coverage gaps, interference sources, and helps optimize AP placement.
