2.6.2. Data Center Architectures
Three-Tier Hierarchical Model:
| Layer | Function | Devices | Traffic Handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | High-speed backbone | Core routers/switches | Move traffic fast between distribution blocks |
| Distribution | Policy, filtering, aggregation | L3 switches, firewalls | Apply policies, aggregate access traffic |
| Access | End device connectivity | L2 switches | Connect servers, workstations |
Collapsed Core: Combines core and distribution into a single layer. Appropriate for smaller environments where three tiers add unnecessary complexity.
Traffic Flow Terminology:
- North-South: Traffic entering/leaving the data center (to/from internet, branch offices)
- East-West: Traffic between servers within the data center (database queries, API calls, storage replication)
