2.6.2. Data Center Architectures

Three-Tier Hierarchical Model:
LayerFunctionDevicesTraffic Handling
CoreHigh-speed backboneCore routers/switchesMove traffic fast between distribution blocks
DistributionPolicy, filtering, aggregationL3 switches, firewallsApply policies, aggregate access traffic
AccessEnd device connectivityL2 switchesConnect servers, workstations

Collapsed Core: Combines core and distribution into a single layer. Appropriate for smaller environments where three tiers add unnecessary complexity.

Traffic Flow Terminology:
  • North-South: Traffic entering/leaving the data center (to/from internet, branch offices)
  • East-West: Traffic between servers within the data center (database queries, API calls, storage replication)
