2.1. The OSI Reference Model
💡 First Principle: The OSI model divides networking into seven layers, each solving one problem and providing services to the layer above. This isn't arbitrary categorization—it's a reflection of how networking actually works, and it's why you troubleshoot Layer 1 before Layer 7.
Without layered thinking, troubleshooting becomes random guessing. "The internet is slow"—is it a bad cable? Wrong route? DNS failure? Application bug? The OSI model gives you a systematic approach: start at Layer 1 and work up. If Layer 1 works (link light on, no CRC errors), move to Layer 2. This methodology solves problems faster than any amount of memorized facts.
