3.4.1. Installation Locations and Cabling
Distribution Frames:
- MDF (Main Distribution Frame): Primary location where external connections (ISP, WAN) enter and core equipment resides
- IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame): Secondary closets extending connectivity closer to users
Installation Considerations:
- Rack size: Standard is 19" width; height measured in "U" (1U = 1.75")
- Port-side exhaust/intake: Manage airflow; hot-aisle/cold-aisle design prevents recirculation
- Cable management: Patch panels, cable trays, proper labeling
- Physical security: Lockable cabinets for network equipment
Structured Cabling:
- Patch panels: Central termination point for horizontal cabling
- Fiber distribution panels: Organize fiber connections
- Cable runs: Horizontal (to workstations) and backbone/vertical (between floors)
