6.3.1. Tweezing, Threading, and Depilatory Creams

💡 First Principle: Tweezing, threading, and depilatories are manual or chemical methods that remove hair at or near the surface without requiring heat. They have a narrower application range than waxing and are most appropriate for small, targeted areas.

Tweezing:
  • Removes individual hairs by gripping the hair shaft close to the skin and pulling in the direction of growth
  • Best for: Eyebrow shaping, stray hairs
  • Infection control: Tweezers are multi-use metal tools — must be cleaned and disinfected between clients
  • Never tweeze inside the nose or inside the ear canal
  • Precision tool — slower than waxing but allows exact shaping control
Threading:
  • Uses a twisted cotton thread to trap and pull multiple hairs simultaneously
  • Popular for eyebrow shaping, upper lip, and facial hair
  • No products applied to skin — suitable for clients who cannot use waxing products
  • Requires specialized skill; relatively low risk of skin trauma when done correctly
  • Not appropriate over active acne or irritated skin
Depilatory creams:
  • Chemical hair removal using alkaline chemicals (thioglycolate compounds) that break down the disulfide bonds in keratin, dissolving the hair shaft at the skin surface
  • Results last slightly longer than shaving (hair removed at/just below surface vs. above)
  • Not permanent — does not affect the follicle
  • Requires patch test due to significant allergic reaction risk
  • Contraindicated on broken skin, irritated skin, near eyes, or any area with sensitivity
  • Contact time must be followed exactly — leaving on too long causes chemical burns

⚠️ Exam Trap: Depilatory creams remove hair at the skin surface level — they do not affect the follicle. Results are temporary, similar to shaving. The exam may ask about the mechanism to distinguish depilatories from electrolysis or laser.

Reflection Question: A client asks for threading instead of waxing because she's nervous about the heat. What other factors should you assess before confirming threading as the right choice?
