5.1. The Basic Facial Sequence

💡 First Principle: A professional facial follows a defined sequence because each step either prepares the skin for what comes next or completes what the previous step started. Skipping or reordering steps reduces effectiveness and increases risk. The sequence is not arbitrary — it reflects the physiology of how skin responds to treatment.

The exam tests the correct order of facial steps and what each step accomplishes. A question may present steps out of order and ask you to identify the problem, or describe a client outcome and ask what went wrong in the sequence.

The basic professional facial sequence:

  1. Consultation and skin analysis
  2. Cleansing — removes makeup, surface oils, debris
  3. Steaming — softens skin, opens follicles
  4. Exfoliation — removes dead cells from stratum corneum
  5. Extractions (if appropriate) — removes comedones
  6. Massage — stimulates circulation, relaxes facial muscles
  7. Mask — targeted treatment based on skin type/condition
  8. Toner — balances pH, removes residue
  9. Moisturizer/SPF — seals and protects

⚠️ Common Misconception: The order of facial steps is flexible based on personal style. The sequence above reflects skin physiology — steaming before extractions (not after) because softened skin allows easier, safer extraction. Exfoliating before the mask allows the mask to penetrate more effectively. Order matters.
