3.2.2. Chemical Labeling, Storage, and Prohibited Substances
💡 First Principle: Proper labeling and storage of chemicals prevents three categories of harm: accidental exposure from misidentified products, chemical reactions from improper storage, and cross-contamination from incorrectly stored items. A well-labeled, properly stored chemical environment eliminates each of these risks systematically.
Labeling requirements:
- Original manufacturer labels must remain intact and legible on all product containers
- If a product is transferred to a secondary container, the secondary container must be labeled with at minimum: product name, hazard warnings, and relevant handling information
- Mixed chemical solutions (like disinfectant concentrate + water) must be labeled with the product name, concentration, and date prepared
- Labels must be in English (additional languages are permitted)
Storage requirements:
- Flammable products must be stored away from heat sources and open flames
- Chemicals must be stored according to their compatibility — products that can react with each other must be stored separately
- Products must not be stored near food, beverages, or client personal items
- Chemical storage areas must be ventilated
- All containers must be closed/sealed when not in active use
Prohibited substances:
- Products containing ingredients banned by federal regulation (FDA) cannot be used
- Mixing chemicals to create non-approved formulations is prohibited
- Products intended for home use only may not be appropriate for professional use
- Methyl methacrylate (MMA) in nail products is prohibited in many states
⚠️ Exam Trap: Transferring a product to an unlabeled or incorrectly labeled container is a violation even if you "know what's in it." The label is required for others who may need to identify the substance quickly in an emergency.
Reflection Question: You need to prepare a fresh batch of disinfectant solution. After mixing, what information must appear on the container label?
