5.1. Monitoring Agent Performance

Monitoring AI agents is fundamentally different from monitoring traditional applications. A traditional application either works or it doesn't — you monitor uptime, latency, and error rates. An AI agent can be up and fast while still giving wrong answers, misrouting conversations, or slowly drifting in quality as the underlying data changes. The exam tests whether you understand this distinction and can design monitoring systems that catch AI-specific failure modes.

Ignoring AI-specific monitoring means you won't know your agent is degrading until users complain — by which time trust is already damaged and adoption has stalled. Traditional APM tools will tell you the agent responded; they won't tell you the response was wrong.

⚠️ Common Misconception: Agent monitoring uses the same metrics and tools as traditional application monitoring. In reality, agent monitoring requires tracking conversational quality, intent accuracy, resolution rates, escalation patterns, and user satisfaction alongside traditional infrastructure metrics. Standard APM tools cover half the picture.
