Autonomous agents operate continuously in the background without waiting for user prompts. They perceive events, evaluate conditions against defined instructions and guardrails, and take action independently. This is the most powerful — and most risky — agent type, requiring the most careful architectural design.

The mental model: an autonomous agent is like an operations team member who watches dashboards, catches anomalies, and takes corrective action during the night shift. Nobody tells them to act — they respond to situations based on training, policies, and judgment within defined boundaries.

Design Best Practices for Autonomous Agents:
  1. Start with narrow scope, expand gradually. Don't design an autonomous agent that handles everything from day one. Start with a specific trigger and action pair, validate it works correctly, then expand.
  2. Define explicit guardrails before defining actions. What the agent cannot do is more important than what it can do. Financial limits, data access restrictions, and escalation rules must be designed first.
  3. Require human approval for high-impact actions. Autonomous doesn't mean unsupervised. Any action with financial, legal, or reputational impact should require approval above a defined threshold.
  4. Build comprehensive logging. Because autonomous agents act without user initiation, every decision and action must be logged for audit and debugging. You can't troubleshoot what you can't trace.
  5. Design kill switches. Administrators must be able to disable an autonomous agent immediately if it behaves unexpectedly.

Exam Trap: A common misconception is that autonomous agents are "better" than task agents because they're more advanced. The exam tests whether you understand that autonomy adds risk and governance overhead. If a user-triggered task agent meets the requirement, recommending an autonomous agent is over-engineering — and the wrong answer.
