1.2.1. Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, and Dynamics 365

Three primary platforms form the core of Microsoft's agentic AI ecosystem. Each targets a different builder persona and solution complexity level.

Copilot Studio is the low-code/no-code platform for building, customizing, and managing agents. It's designed for business analysts, citizen developers, and professional developers who need to create conversational AI agents without deep coding expertise. Copilot Studio provides:

  • Visual agent builder with topic design and flow orchestration
  • Generative AI orchestration for natural language understanding
  • Pre-built connectors to Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Dataverse, and external systems
  • Agent extensibility through MCP, plugins, and Computer Use
  • Publishing to web, Teams, Dynamics 365 channels, and custom channels

Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Foundry) is the pro-developer platform for building custom AI solutions. It targets data scientists, ML engineers, and AI developers who need fine-grained control over models, data, and deployment. Microsoft Foundry provides:

  • A catalog of 11,000+ models (Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, open-source)
  • Foundry Tools (formerly Azure AI Services) — pre-built AI services for vision, speech, language, and decision
  • Foundry Models — serverless or managed compute model deployments
  • Agent Service for building code-first agents with memory, tool use, and orchestration
  • Custom model training, fine-tuning, and evaluation

Dynamics 365 AI refers to the embedded AI capabilities within Dynamics 365 business applications — Copilot features, prebuilt agents, and AI-powered workflows that are configured rather than built. These include:

  • Copilot in D365 Sales, Customer Service, Finance, Supply Chain Management
  • Prebuilt agents: Account Reconciliation Agent, Quality Evaluation Agent, Customer Intent Agent
  • AI Builder for custom AI models within Power Platform

Exam Trap: Don't assume Copilot Studio is "less powerful" because it's low-code. For many enterprise scenarios — customer service agents, internal help desks, task automation — Copilot Studio is the recommended platform because it offers faster time-to-value with built-in governance. Microsoft Foundry is the right choice when you need custom models, complex orchestration, or capabilities beyond what Copilot Studio provides.

Reflection Question: A company needs an AI agent that uses a custom-trained model to analyze medical imaging data, then surfaces findings within a Dynamics 365 Customer Service case. Which platforms are involved, and how do they interact?
