7.1. Domain Weight Strategy and Study Priorities
The AB-100 exam distributes weight across three domains. Your study time should roughly follow these weights, with extra attention to your weakest areas.
Domain Weight Distribution:
Study Priority Matrix:
| Priority | Domain | Study Focus | Time Allocation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Highest | Deploy (40-45%) | ALM processes, security (prompt injection), responsible AI, monitoring metrics, testing AI agents | ~40% of study time |
| 2 — High | Design (25-30%) | Agent types, Copilot Studio design, Foundry model selection, M365 extensibility, D365 Copilot customization | ~30% of study time |
| 3 — Foundational | Plan (25-30%) | AI strategy, ROI analysis, build-vs-extend, data readiness, multi-agent architecture | ~30% of study time |
High-Yield Topics (Appear in Multiple Domains):
These topics cross domain boundaries, meaning they appear in questions from different angles:
- Copilot Studio — appears in Design (agent design) and Deploy (ALM, testing)
- Microsoft Foundry — appears in Design (model selection) and Deploy (ALM, model security)
- Data for AI — appears in Plan (data readiness) and Design (grounding, processing) and Deploy (data residency)
- Responsible AI — appears in Plan (strategy) and Deploy (compliance, governance)
Exam Format Guidance:
The exam uses 40-60 multiple-choice and scenario-based questions in approximately 100 minutes. Scenario-based questions dominate — expect multi-paragraph business scenarios followed by "which approach should the architect recommend?" Most questions test decision-making, not recall.
Time Management:
With ~100 minutes for 40-60 questions, you have roughly 1.5-2.5 minutes per question. Flag complex scenarios and return to them. Don't spend more than 3 minutes on any single question in the first pass.
