4.3. AI Solutions with Microsoft Foundry
When prebuilt solutions fail to meet requirements, the architect faces a critical decision — choosing wrong means either over-engineering or under-building.
Think of Foundry as two distinct workshops: Foundry Tools is a hardware store with ready-made AI services you buy off the shelf (vision, speech, language), while Foundry Models is a custom fabrication shop where you select from 11,000+ models and build exactly what you need.
Microsoft Foundry is the platform for building custom AI solutions that go beyond what Copilot Studio and D365 provide out of the box. When prebuilt agents don't meet requirements, when you need custom models, or when you need code-first generative experiences — Foundry is where you build them.
The distinction between Foundry's two main components trips up a lot of exam candidates. Foundry Tools are AI services — vision, speech, language, decision, and content safety. Foundry Models is the model catalog — thousands of models from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and other providers. They're complementary, not interchangeable.
⚠️ Common Misconception: Foundry Tools and Foundry Models are the same product. In reality, Foundry Tools are pre-built AI services (Document Intelligence, Speech, Vision, Language, Content Safety), while Foundry Models is the model catalog with thousands of models for deployment and fine-tuning. An architect proposes Foundry Tools when a standardized AI capability fits the requirement; an architect proposes Foundry Models when a custom or specialized model is needed.
