1.2. The Microsoft Agentic AI Ecosystem

Microsoft's agentic AI capabilities are spread across multiple platforms, each designed for different audiences and use cases. The architect's challenge — and what the exam tests heavily — is knowing which platform to choose for which requirement, and how they work together.

Choosing the wrong platform doesn't just mean suboptimal performance — it means rework, lock-in to capabilities that don't match requirements, and missed integration opportunities. The ecosystem is designed to be complementary, not competitive, but only if you understand the boundaries.

Think of the ecosystem as concentric rings: Microsoft 365 Copilot at the center (broadest reach, least customization), Copilot Studio in the middle (custom agents, low-code), and Microsoft Foundry at the edge (full custom AI, code-first). Each ring trades simplicity for control.

⚠️ Common Misconception: Foundry Tools and Foundry Models sound similar but serve entirely different purposes — Tools are pre-built AI services (vision, speech, language), while Models is a catalog of 11,000+ models for custom deployment.
