5.2. Microsoft Fabric: The Unified Analytics Platform

💡 First Principle: Microsoft Fabric represents a paradigm shift: instead of assembling separate services (Data Factory + Synapse + Power BI + Purview), Fabric bundles everything into a single SaaS platform with shared storage (OneLake) and unified governance. On the Control-Convenience spectrum from Phase 1, Fabric sits at the far "convenience" end. Think of it as the difference between buying individual appliances versus an all-in-one kitchen system—less flexibility, but everything works together seamlessly.

What problem does this solve? In traditional architectures, data is copied between services—Data Factory copies to Data Lake, Synapse copies to its warehouse, Power BI imports to its cache. Each copy creates governance complexity and storage costs. Fabric's OneLake eliminates copies: all services access the same data in place.

Key Characteristics:
  • Single sign-on, single billing, single governance model
  • All workloads access the same data in OneLake—no data copying between services
  • Built on Power BI capacity model (F SKUs)
  • Copilot integration across all workloads
