Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730) Study Guide [111 Minute Read]

A First-Principles Approach to AI-Powered Productivity

Welcome to the Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730) Study Guide. This guide moves beyond memorizing menus and feature lists. It is designed to build a robust mental model of how generative AI works in a business context, so you understand the why behind every Copilot decision and can reason through any scenario the exam throws at you. That includes the newer pieces of the platform: Work IQ, the work-context layer that decides what Copilot knows about your job, and Microsoft Copilot Cowork, the agentic system that carries out multi-step work on your behalf.

Each topic is aligned with the official AB-730 exam objectives (skills measured as of October 20, 2026), targeting the specific cognitive skills required for success. The AB-730 exam leans heavily on scenario-based questions ("given this business situation, which Copilot action is most appropriate?"), so this guide emphasizes decision-making frameworks over rote definitions. Microsoft notes that most questions cover generally available (GA) features, but commonly used preview features can appear, so this guide flags preview and Frontier features as it goes.

Exam Details: Multiple-choice with interactive components | 700/1000 passing score | Proctored

Prerequisites: Comfortable navigating Microsoft 365 apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint). Familiarity with common business tasks: drafting emails, creating presentations, managing documents. No coding or technical AI background required.

A note on names: Microsoft has renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot to Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat to Microsoft Copilot Chat. The product, the license and the security controls did not change; only the names (and the web address, which is moving to copilot.cloud.microsoft) did. This guide uses the new names. The exam outline, and so the objective titles you will see quoted here, still says "Microsoft 365 Copilot": it is the same licensed product. A few names Microsoft has not changed keep "Microsoft 365", such as Microsoft 365 Copilot connectors.

Exam Domain Weights

Note: The October 20, 2026 outline has four domains. Generative AI fundamentals is the heaviest at 25–30% and is covered in two phases here: capabilities in Phase 2 and responsible AI in Phase 3. The other three domains carry equal weight (20–25% each): prompts and chats (Phases 4 and 5), business content and collaboration (Phases 7 and 8), and agents (Phase 6). The agents domain is new. It is about choosing and using prebuilt agents and Copilot Cowork, not about building agents, which is no longer an objective. Plan your study time roughly evenly, with a little extra for the fundamentals.
