2.3.3. Azure Route Server

Azure Route Server enables dynamic routing between your network virtual appliances (NVAs) and Azure's virtual network routing.

💡 First Principle: Azure Route Server doesn't route traffic—it exchanges routes. It speaks BGP with your NVAs and injects their routes into your VNet, eliminating manual UDR management.

Key Capabilities:
  • BGP peering with NVAs (up to 8 peers)
  • Automatic route propagation to VNet subnets
  • Branch-to-branch transit for SD-WAN scenarios
  • Route exchange between ExpressRoute and VPN
When to Use:
  • SD-WAN appliances that need to advertise routes
  • Active-active NVA deployments
  • Complex routing with multiple on-premises sites
