6.2. Azure Generative AI Services

💡 First Principle: Azure provides multiple paths to generative AI. Azure AI Foundry is the unified platform for building AI applications. Azure OpenAI Service provides access to OpenAI models (GPT, DALL-E) with enterprise features. The Model Catalog offers thousands of models from multiple providers. Knowing which path serves which need is essential.

What breaks without understanding these services: Questions ask "Which service provides a central hub for AI development with access to multiple model providers?" Without understanding the service hierarchy, Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Foundry blur together. Foundry is the platform (development environment, tools, governance). OpenAI Service is one of the model providers accessible through that platform.

Think of it like a shopping experience. Azure AI Foundry is the mall—the environment where everything comes together. Azure OpenAI Service is an anchor store—a major destination with specific products (GPT, DALL-E). The Model Catalog is the directory—showing all stores (models) available in the mall. You use the mall (Foundry) to access stores (services), and the directory (Catalog) to discover options.

Azure provides multiple services for implementing generative AI. Understanding the differences between them is essential for the exam.
