Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901) Study Guide [61 Minute Read]

A First-Principles Approach to Building AI Solutions on Azure

Welcome. This guide doesn't ask you to memorize a glossary of Azure service names and hope the right one shows up on exam day. Instead, it builds a mental model of why each AI capability exists and what problem it solves, so that when a question describes a scenario you've never seen, you can reason your way to the answer. That "why-first" approach is the whole point: the AI-901 rewards understanding over recall.

Official Exam Objectives: Exam AI-901: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals

The AI-901 is a fundamentals-level certification with no prerequisites, aimed at people at the start of an AI-development career. Most questions are multiple-choice (single answer and multi-select), with some matching and scenario-style items. You should also be comfortable reading short Python snippets, because the exam shows code that calls AI models and asks you to recognize what it does. The exam is roughly 40-60 questions in about 45 minutes, and you need a score of 700 out of 1000 to pass.

📝 Note: AI-901 replaces the retiring AI-900 exam. The big shift: AI-900 walked through individual Azure AI services one by one, while AI-901 is built around Microsoft Foundry — the unified platform for deploying models, building agents, and extracting information. Over half the exam is hands-on implementation in Foundry, so don't treat this as a renamed AI-900.

Exam Domain Weights

The weighting tells you where to spend your time. The concepts domain (responsible AI, how models work, and the catalog of AI workloads) is foundational and concentrated in Phases 2-3. But the majority of the exam lives in the implementation domain — Phases 4-6 — where you build generative AI apps and agents, wire up text/speech/vision solutions, and extract structured information with Azure Content Understanding. If your study time is limited, weight it toward Foundry.
