2.3. The 5 Focus Areas and 40 Processes
💡 First Principle: PMBOK® 8 reintroduces process-oriented structure — 5 Focus Areas containing roughly 40 non-prescriptive processes — because the principles-only 7th edition left many practitioners without enough concrete "how do I actually do this" guidance; the 8th edition blends 7th-edition flexibility with 6th-edition-style practical structure.
The 5 Focus Areas mirror the classic project life cycle, but the processes inside them are explicitly non-prescriptive — you're expected to tailor which ones apply, not execute all 40 on every project:
- Initiating — strategic alignment, authorization, establishing high-level intent.
- Planning — scope, schedule, cost, risk planning, with room for iterative adjustment.
- Executing — coordination, leadership, and stakeholder engagement during delivery.
- Monitoring & Controlling — performance tracking, issue management, variance analysis.
- Closing — knowledge transfer, formal acceptance, and capturing long-term value.
This is a deliberate middle path: PMBOK® 6 had 49 prescriptive processes across 5 rigid process groups; PMBOK® 7 dropped process groups entirely in favor of pure principles and performance domains; PMBOK® 8 brings back a lighter, "use what applies" process structure without reverting to a rigid waterfall checklist.
⚠️ Exam Trap: Assuming "non-prescriptive" means optional to know. The exam still expects you to recognize which Focus Area a described activity belongs to — it just won't test you on a rigid required sequence of all 40 processes.
