1.4. Eligibility and the Certification Process

💡 First Principle: PMI gates the PMP behind verified experience, not just an exam pass, because the exam assumes you already have real project-leadership judgment to apply — it validates that judgment, it doesn't teach it from zero.

Eligibility requires one of four combined education/experience paths, all requiring project leadership (not just participation) within the last 10 years:

Education LevelRequired Project Management Experience
Secondary/high school equivalent60 months (5 years)
Associate's degree or equivalent48 months (4 years)
Bachelor's degree36 months (3 years)
PMI GAC-accredited bachelor's/postgraduate degree24 months (2 years)

Experience is tracked in months of leading projects, not project count — overlapping project timelines don't double-count, and routine/operational/administrative work doesn't qualify.

Candidates must also document 35 hours of project-management-specific commercial training aligned to the ECO — active CAPM® holders are exempt from this requirement (the CAPM® itself satisfies it). Books and practice exams alone never count as training hours.

⚠️ Exam Trap: Assuming any professional experience "leading" counts. PMI's audit process specifically checks that you directed projects (owned scope, budget, or team decisions) rather than simply contributed to one as a team member.

Reflection Question: Mapping your own experience against the eligibility table — which path do you qualify under, and do your documented project entries clearly show you leading, not just participating?
