2.2. The 7 Performance Domains

💡 First Principle: Performance domains are the areas of continuous attention a project manager holds simultaneously throughout the project's life — refined from 8 to 7 in PMBOK® 8 by folding "Development Approach & Life Cycle" and "Planning" considerations into the other domains rather than treating them as standalone.

PMBOK® 8's 7 performance domains are: Governance, Scope, Schedule, Finance, Stakeholders, Resources, and Risk. Unlike the ECO's People/Process/Business Environment domains (which describe what PMI tests), performance domains describe what a project manager continuously manages — they're overlapping, interacting areas of focus rather than a sequential checklist.

Performance domainWhat it focuses onWhere the exam tests it
GovernanceDecision rights, oversight and escalation — how the project is directed and held to account5.1 governance, 5.3 change control
ScopeDefining, agreeing and controlling what the project will and will not deliver, aligned to intended value4.2 scope, 4.3 value
ScheduleSequencing work and managing timing so delivery keeps pace with the objectives4.8 schedule
FinanceFunding, budgeting and tracking spend against the value delivered4.6 finance
StakeholdersIdentifying, engaging and aligning the people who affect or are affected by the project3.4–3.6 stakeholders, 3.8 communication
ResourcesAcquiring, allocating and sustaining the people, equipment and materials the project needs3.3 team, 4.4 resources, 4.5 procurement
RiskIdentifying, analyzing and responding to uncertainty, both threats and opportunities5.5 risk, 5.4 issues

Two of PMBOK 7's eight domains did not survive as separate domains: Development Approach & Life Cycle and Planning now live inside the others, which is why life-cycle selection is examined through Process task 1 (4.1) rather than as a domain of its own.

Notice the direct line from performance domains to ECO tasks: Governance maps to Business Environment's "define and establish project governance"; Finance maps to Process's "plan and manage finance"; Risk maps to Business Environment's "plan and manage risk." The performance domains are the PMBOK® 8 vocabulary, and the ECO tasks are the testable behaviors built on that vocabulary — this is exactly why Phase 2 exists before Phases 3-5.

⚠️ Exam Trap: Confusing performance domains (PMBOK® 8's conceptual areas) with ECO domains (People/Process/Business Environment, the exam's scoring categories) — they are different frameworks that happen to share some vocabulary. A question never asks you to name "the 7 performance domains" directly; it tests whether you can apply the thinking behind them.

Reflection Question: Pick any one performance domain (say, Stakeholders). Which ECO tasks, across all three domains, touch that same area of concern?
