2.3. Prompt Engineering and Grounding
💡 First Principle: Prompt engineering is the skill of communicating effectively with AI—the better your input, the better your output. Grounding connects AI to specific knowledge sources so it can provide relevant, accurate responses rather than generic ones. Together, they transform generic AI capabilities into valuable business tools.
Without good prompts, AI gives generic or irrelevant responses. Without grounding, AI can't answer questions about YOUR organization, YOUR documents, YOUR data. Imagine asking a new employee to write a company announcement without giving them any background—the result would be generic at best. Prompting provides instructions; grounding provides context.
Think of a research assistant: prompting tells them what you want ("write a summary of Q3 sales performance"), and grounding gives them access to the actual data ("here are the Q3 reports"). Without clear instructions, they don't know what to do. Without data access, they can't do it accurately.
