6.3. Practice Questions
Answers and rationales follow all ten questions. Mixed domains, exam style.
Q1. You import a monthly budget workbook. Each month a new column (for example, "2026-11") is added. The query must keep working without edits and produce one row per department per month. Which transformation should you apply after selecting the Department column? A) Unpivot Columns B) Unpivot Other Columns C) Pivot Column D) Transpose
Q2. A semantic model in a Fabric capacity workspace reads Delta tables from a lakehouse. Reports must reflect new data within minutes, with Import-level query performance, and without copying data during refresh. Which storage mode should you use? A) Import with scheduled refresh every 30 minutes B) DirectQuery C) Direct Lake D) Dual
Q3. A measure is defined as Red Sales = CALCULATE([Total Sales], Product[Color] = "Red"). A user selects Blue in a Color slicer. What does the measure return? A) Blank B) Blue sales C) Red sales D) Total sales for all colors
Q4. Sales has OrderDateKey and ShipDateKey columns related to the Date table. The OrderDate relationship is active. You need a measure that returns sales by ship date using the existing Date slicer. What should you include in the measure? A) CROSSFILTER B) USERELATIONSHIP C) TREATAS with a new Date table D) Make both relationships active
Q5. A model's Inventory table stores units on hand per product per day. The month total in a matrix shows roughly 30 times the expected value, and the current month should show the latest day that has data. Which function best fixes the measure? A) SUM B) AVERAGE C) LASTDATE D) LASTNONBLANK
Q6. Users want to switch a report between a chart and a table of the same data with a button, without losing their slicer selections. How should you configure the bookmarks? A) Data checked, Display checked B) Data cleared, Display checked, Selected visuals C) Data checked, Display cleared D) Current page cleared only
Q7. A report page must update every 5 seconds with new rows from an operational SQL database. The workspace is on a Fabric F64 capacity. What should you do? A) Import mode with scheduled refresh B) DirectQuery with automatic page refresh, after the capacity admin allows the interval C) Import mode with automatic page refresh D) Data alerts on a dashboard tile
Q8. A report author must create and edit reports in a workspace, but must not add users to the workspace or share items. Which workspace role should you assign? A) Admin B) Member C) Contributor D) Viewer
Q9. You define a dynamic RLS role in Desktop using 'Security'[Email] = USERPRINCIPALNAME() and publish. Testers who are workspace Members report they still see all regions. What explains this, and how should the role be tested? A) USERPRINCIPALNAME returns blank in the service; use USERNAME B) RLS doesn't apply to Members; test with Test as role or as a Viewer C) The role must be assigned in Desktop D) The relationship must be bidirectional
Q10. A model refreshes from an on-premises SQL Server in Import mode and is used by several authors, some of whom also need DirectQuery reports against the same server. What should you configure? A) A personal-mode gateway on each author's computer B) A standard on-premises data gateway with the SQL Server data source added C) No gateway, because the service connects directly D) A VNet data gateway
Answers.
A1: B. Unpivot Other Columns records the column to keep (Department) and unpivots everything else, so new month columns are included automatically (2.3.2). A hard-codes the current month columns; C and D reshape in the wrong direction.
A2: C. Direct Lake reads Delta tables in OneLake with VertiPaq performance and refreshes by framing (metadata only) on a Fabric capacity (2.1.3). A copies data and won't meet "within minutes" cheaply; B sends every query to the source with slower performance; D is a composite-model table setting.
A3: C. A boolean filter argument in CALCULATE overwrites the existing filter on Product[Color], so the slicer's Blue selection is replaced and red sales are returned (3.2.2). KEEPFILTERS would return blank (A).
A4: B. USERELATIONSHIP inside CALCULATE activates the existing inactive ShipDateKey relationship for that measure, so the existing Date slicer filters by ship date (3.1.3). Only one relationship between two tables can be active (D); CROSSFILTER changes direction, not which relationship is used.
A5: D. Inventory is semi-additive. LASTNONBLANK returns the value for the last date that has data, giving correct month totals and the latest available day for the current month (3.2.4). LASTDATE returns the last calendar date in context, and the measure evaluated on that date is blank for an incomplete month; SUM causes the 30x total.
A6: B. Clearing Data keeps the user's filters and slicers unchanged; Display controls visibility; Selected visuals limits the bookmark to the chart and table (4.2.1). Checking Data resets slicers to the saved state.
A7: B. Automatic page refresh requires a live source such as DirectQuery; Import isn't supported (C). On dedicated capacity the capacity admin sets the minimum interval (default 5 minutes, configurable down to 1 second) (4.2.5). Alerts (D) notify, they don't refresh pages.
A8: C. Contributors create, edit, and delete content and publish reports, but can't add members or share items (5.2.1). Member over-grants; Viewer can't edit.
A9: B. RLS applies only to Viewers and read-only consumers; Admins, Members, and Contributors see all data (5.2.3). Test with View as in Desktop or Test as role in the service, and assign real users as Viewers or through an app. USERPRINCIPALNAME returns the UPN in the service (A is false); role membership is assigned in the service (C).
A10: B. A standard gateway supports multiple users, Import refresh, and DirectQuery against the same on-premises source (5.1.4). Personal mode is single-user and Import-only (A); on-premises sources need a gateway (C); a VNet data gateway is for Azure virtual networks (D).
