4.1. Create Reports

💡 First Principle: A report exists to answer specific questions quickly for a specific audience. Every design choice (the visual type, its formatting, the filters around it, the page it sits on) either shortens the path from glance to answer or lengthens it. Good reports are decided by the question, not by which visual looks impressive.

Why care? Executives give a report a few seconds before deciding whether to trust it. A pie chart with twelve slices, an unreadable color scheme, or a filter that silently hides data costs credibility that's hard to regain. This skill area is broad on the exam: visual selection, formatting, Copilot, themes, conditional formatting, filters and slicers, page settings, paginated reports, and visual calculations all appear.

The mental model is question first, visual second. Name the question (comparison? trend? composition? relationship? single number?), and the right family of visuals follows almost automatically.

⚠️ Common Misconception: A paginated report is just a Power BI report printed to PDF. Paginated reports are a separate, pixel-perfect format built in Power BI Report Builder for documents that must print or export cleanly across many pages, like invoices and statements. Interactive reports are exploration canvases that don't paginate long tables.
