5.1. Exam Strategy and Time Management
AB-900 at a glance:
- 40–60 questions (typically around 45)
- 45 minutes
- Passing score: 700/1000
- Format: multiple choice, multiple response, some interactive/scenario-based items
Time management:
- Target 45–55 seconds per question
- Flag and return: if a question takes more than 90 seconds, flag it and move on — come back at the end
- Multiple response questions (select all that apply) take longer — budget 90 seconds for these
- Leave 5 minutes at the end to review flagged items
Question approach:
- Read the question stem and identify the key requirement (what problem is being solved? what outcome is needed?)
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers first
- For "which tool / which admin center" questions: identify the object type → match to the admin center that owns it
- For "which Purview tool" questions: ask — is this about preventing, detecting, investigating, or measuring?
- Watch for absolutes: "always," "never," "only" are often traps
High-value areas to review last (highest exam weight):
- Microsoft Purview tools — know what each one is for
- Copilot data access model — Graph + permissions
- Admin center ownership map — which tool for which task
- Zero Trust principles — the three pillars
- Conditional Access — conditions vs. controls
