5.1. Exam Strategy and Time Management

AB-900 at a glance:
  • 40–60 questions (typically around 45)
  • 45 minutes
  • Passing score: 700/1000
  • Format: multiple choice, multiple response, some interactive/scenario-based items
Time management:
  • Target 45–55 seconds per question
  • Flag and return: if a question takes more than 90 seconds, flag it and move on — come back at the end
  • Multiple response questions (select all that apply) take longer — budget 90 seconds for these
  • Leave 5 minutes at the end to review flagged items
Question approach:
  1. Read the question stem and identify the key requirement (what problem is being solved? what outcome is needed?)
  2. Eliminate obviously wrong answers first
  3. For "which tool / which admin center" questions: identify the object type → match to the admin center that owns it
  4. For "which Purview tool" questions: ask — is this about preventing, detecting, investigating, or measuring?
  5. Watch for absolutes: "always," "never," "only" are often traps
High-value areas to review last (highest exam weight):
  1. Microsoft Purview tools — know what each one is for
  2. Copilot data access model — Graph + permissions
  3. Admin center ownership map — which tool for which task
  4. Zero Trust principles — the three pillars
  5. Conditional Access — conditions vs. controls
