2.1.4. Teams Admin Center: Teams, Channels, and Policies

šŸ’” First Principle: Teams is a collaboration hub that combines chat, meetings, calling, and file sharing in one place. Its admin center controls the policies that govern user behavior — what they can do in meetings, how they communicate, what apps they can install — not the content of individual teams.

Teams is organized around a hierarchy of objects:

  • Team: a workspace with a defined membership. Teams map to a Microsoft 365 Group, which creates a SharePoint site and shared mailbox automatically.
  • Channels: subdivisions of a team. Standard channels are visible to all team members. Private channels have their own membership subset. Shared channels can include external users.
  • Policies: rules applied to users or groups of users that govern behavior across all their Teams activity.

The Teams admin center manages:

  • Meeting policies: control recording, transcription, lobby settings, external participants
  • Messaging policies: control who can delete messages, use GIFs, send urgent notifications
  • App setup policies: control which apps are pinned or allowed in Teams
  • Calling policies: control PSTN calling features
  • Guest access: control what guests can see and do across the tenant

An important concept: policy assignment. You can assign policies to individual users, groups, or set a global (org-wide default) policy. When you assign a policy to a group, members inherit it — similar to group-based licensing.

āš ļø Exam Trap: You cannot manage Teams email security or SharePoint permissions from the Teams admin center. Teams admin center = Teams behavior policies. Security for Teams content goes through Microsoft Defender and Purview, not Teams admin.

Reflection Question: You want all users in your Finance department to have meetings that automatically record but disable participant recording. What do you configure, in which admin center, and how do you target only Finance users?
