Microsoft organizes Azure certification by role across three tiers. Fundamentals covers Azure (AZ-900), Data (DP-900), AI (AI-901) and Security, Compliance and Identity (SC-900), alongside a Copilot and AI business track in Copilot and Agent Administration (AB-900), AI Business Professional (AB-730) and AI Transformation Leader (AB-731). Associate covers Administrator (AZ-104), Security (AZ-500), Networking (AZ-700), Fabric Data Engineer (DP-700), AI Apps and Agents Developer (AI-103) and AI Cloud Developer (AI-200). Expert covers Solutions Architect (AZ-305), DevOps Engineer (AZ-400) and Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect (AB-100).

Exams run from 45 minutes at fundamentals level to 150 for expert-tier, and are scored on a scaled system where 700 of 1000 passes. Microsoft uses a wider range of question formats than most vendors: multiple choice, drag-and-drop, build-list ordering, hot-area, repeated-answer sets and full case studies. Role-based certifications expire after a year but renew free through a short online assessment rather than a full re-sit.

Career outcomes: AZ-900 is the standard entry point for anyone new to Azure, AZ-104 is the most-requested Azure credential in job postings, and AZ-305 is the architect track most organizations promote into. The AI and Copilot family is the fastest-moving part of the portfolio, and demand for it currently outstrips the supply of certified people.

What you will study: identity and access with Microsoft Entra ID, RBAC and Conditional Access, governance through management groups, Azure Policy and Blueprints, virtual networks, peering, VPN and ExpressRoute, compute across virtual machines, App Service, Functions and AKS, storage accounts and tiers, monitoring with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics (KQL), backup and disaster recovery, cost management, infrastructure as code with Bicep and ARM templates, data engineering on Microsoft Fabric, and AI workloads built on Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio.
