Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate (SC-500) Study Guide [89 Minute Read]
A First-Principles Approach to Cloud and AI Security
Cloud security stopped being a network problem the day workloads stopped living behind one network. This guide builds the mental model first — how identity, secrets, governance, and monitoring fit together as one system — then walks the official exam blueprint domain by domain, including the AI-security ground that SC-500 covers for the first time in a Microsoft security exam.

📝 Beta Exam Note: SC-500 opened in beta on May 15, 2026, and was still tagged "(beta)" on Microsoft's certification page as of this guide's last verification (July 22, 2026). Beta exams aren't scored immediately — Microsoft is still gathering data on question quality, and results take longer to arrive. AZ-500 and the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification retire August 31, 2026; SC-500 is the confirmed successor, with a genuinely new AI-security sub-domain layered on top of the Azure infrastructure-security content AZ-500 always covered.
Exam details: 120 minutes, proctored, passing score 700/1000. The exam is implementation-focused — expect scenario questions that test how to configure a control, not just what it does. May include interactive question types.
Exam Domain Weights
The four domains are weighted almost evenly, with storage/database/networking security carrying the largest single share. Don't read the AI-security bullets under Secure Compute as a minor add-on because their slice of the pie looks modest — it's the newest content on the exam and the area with the fewest existing study resources, so budget disproportionate study time there even though the point weight is average.
