5.1. Troubleshooting Theory and Methodology
💡 First Principle: Troubleshooting is a hypothesis-driven scientific process, not random fix attempts. Every action should be based on a theory about what's wrong. Random changes don't solve problems—they obscure them, sometimes making diagnosis impossible by masking the original symptoms.
The CompTIA troubleshooting methodology is tested directly. The exam may describe a technician's actions and ask which step they're on, or present a scenario and ask what should happen next. Know the steps and their order.
⚠️ Common Misconception: Experienced admins skip steps because they "know" what's wrong intuitively. On the exam (and in a professional context), the methodology must be followed. Intuition is used to generate faster theories, not to bypass the process.
