4.2.2. Environmental Controls

💡 First Principle: Servers are sensitive machines. Heat destroys components; humidity causes condensation and corrosion; fire is catastrophic; power fluctuations corrupt data and damage hardware. Environmental controls maintain the conditions servers require to operate reliably.

Environmental Control Systems
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning): Maintains temperature (typically 65–75°F / 18–24°C) and humidity (40–60% relative humidity) within acceptable ranges. Data centers require dedicated precision cooling—standard office HVAC is insufficient.
  • Fire suppression: Data centers cannot use water-based sprinklers (water destroys electronics). Common alternatives:
    • FM-200 (HFC-227ea): Clean agent that suppresses fire by chemical reaction, not oxygen depletion. Safe for occupied spaces. Evaporates without residue.
    • CO2: Suppresses by oxygen displacement. Effective but dangerous in occupied spaces (causes asphyxiation).
    • Halon: Legacy agent; effective but environmentally harmful and largely phased out.
  • Sensors: Temperature, humidity, smoke, water (leak detection), motion, and power sensors provide early warning of environmental threats.
Why Humidity Matters
  • Too high humidity: Condensation forms on components, causing corrosion and short circuits.
  • Too low humidity: Static electricity buildup increases ESD (electrostatic discharge) risk, which can silently damage components.

⚠️ Exam Trap: FM-200 (the most common modern clean agent) suppresses fire without removing oxygen, making it safe for occupied data centers. CO2 suppresses fire by removing oxygen—evacuation is required before CO2 discharge. Confusing these is a common exam distractor.

Reflection Question: A fire suppression system discharges in a data center while a technician is working inside. FM-200 was used. Is the technician at risk from the suppression agent? What if the system had used CO2 instead?
