💡 First Principle: Every server exists within a defined lifecycle—from the moment it's purchased to the day it's securely destroyed. Treating the lifecycle as a structured process (not an afterthought) prevents security incidents, budget surprises, and data loss.
Most admins focus on the operational phase because that's where the work is. But the phases that bracket operations—procurement and decommissioning—carry disproportionate risk when handled poorly. A server acquired without an HCL check causes compatibility failures. A server disposed of without proper media destruction causes data breaches.
The lifecycle isn't just a management framework. It's how organizations avoid paying for hardware they don't use, ensure they're compliant with licensing, and prevent sensitive data from walking out the door on discarded drives.
