1.1.1. Understanding the AWS DVA-C02 Exam: Purpose & Audience
The AWS Certified Developer - Associate (DVA-C02) exam validates a candidate's ability to effectively develop, deploy, and debug cloud-based applications using AWS. It targets professionals in a developer role who write code and interact with AWS services via APIs, SDKs, and the CLI.
The exam assesses your ability to implement and manage continuous delivery systems and methodologies on AWS, validating practical skills in areas such as:
- Writing code for serverless applications (AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway).
- Interacting with AWS services using APIs, SDKs, and the CLI.
- Implementing CI/CD pipelines for applications.
- Debugging and troubleshooting applications.
- Applying security best practices in application development.
- Understanding and optimizing application performance and scalability.
Successful DVA-C02 candidates typically have:
- One or more years of hands-on experience developing and maintaining an AWS-based application.
- In-depth knowledge of at least one high-level programming language.
- Understanding of core AWS services and basic AWS architecture best practices.
How it differs from neighbouring certifications: Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) validates designing solutions, and designing architectures is explicitly out of scope for DVA-C02. Both Associate exams recommend about one year of hands-on experience, so the difference is focus, not seniority. Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is foundational: up to 6 months of exposure, with coding out of scope. DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) expects 2+ years provisioning, operating and managing AWS environments. DVA-C02 is the one that validates writing, deploying and debugging application code with the AWS APIs, CLI and SDKs.
