4.2. Operational Automation

💡 First Principle: An operation that happens manually is an operation that will eventually fail to happen. Think of it like an automatic dishwasher versus hand-washing: the dishwasher runs the same cycle every time without fatigue or distraction. Unlike manual runbooks, automated remediation executes at machine speed — without the risk that someone skips a step at 2 AM. Operational automation is not about replacing engineers — it's about ensuring that routine, predictable tasks happen consistently, at the right time, every time, without requiring human attention. This frees engineers to work on problems that actually require human judgment.

This section covers the two task areas under Domain 3's second task: using AWS services to automate management of existing resources (Task 3.2). The primary tools are Systems Manager (for instance and resource management), EventBridge + Lambda (for event-driven automation), and AWS Config (for compliance automation).
