5.1. Assessing AI Business Readiness and Maturity

💡 First Principle: An organization can only absorb as much AI as its weakest foundation allows. Readiness assessment finds those weak foundations before they stall an initiative; maturity assessment locates where the organization is on its journey so that the next investment matches the next step rather than a distant ambition. You cannot plan a route without knowing both the destination and your current position.

Why care? Because investing ahead of readiness wastes money in predictable ways: models without usable data, tools nobody adopts, pilots nobody can govern into production. And investing behind readiness wastes opportunity. Honest assessment makes AI investment proportional to what the organization can actually use.

The mental model is a fitness assessment before a training plan. A coach does not hand a marathon plan to someone who has not run in years, nor a beginner plan to a seasoned runner. The coach measures several dimensions (endurance, strength, flexibility, injury history), identifies the limiting ones, and designs a progression. AI readiness works the same way across leadership, data, culture, technology, and governance.

⚠️ Common Misconception: "AI readiness is mainly a technology question" and "the number of AI pilots shows how mature we are." Readiness spans leadership, data, culture, technology, and governance, and many pilots with none in production indicate pilot purgatory, not maturity.
