AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) Study Guide [162 Minute Read]
A First-Principles Approach to AI Business Strategy
Welcome. The AIB-C01 is unusual among AWS certifications: it never asks you to configure a service, write a line of code, or tune a model. It asks you to make the decisions that come before and around those activities, the ones that determine whether an AI initiative creates value or quietly drains budget. This guide builds a mental model for those decisions: why AI behaves differently from ordinary software, why a working pilot is not yet a business result, why governance is designed in rather than bolted on. Once you understand the "why," the exam's scenarios stop being vocabulary tests and become judgment calls you can reason through.
Official Exam Objectives: AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) Exam Guide
The AIB-C01 is scenario-driven. Most questions describe an organization ("A retail company wants to…", "A consulting firm discovers that employees are…") and ask which approach, control, metric, or next step is most appropriate. You will see two item types: multiple choice (one correct answer out of four) and multiple response (two or more correct answers out of five or more, and you must select all of them for credit). Wrong answers are rarely absurd. They are usually partial measures, the right tool for a different problem, or technically valid actions that belong to an engineer rather than a business strategist.
The exam has 85 questions in 130 minutes. Scores are reported on a scale of 100 to 1,000, and 700 is required to pass. Scoring is compensatory: you need to pass the exam overall, not each domain. Unanswered questions count as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave an item blank. There are no prerequisites; AWS recommends about six months of experience working with or alongside teams adopting AI. The exam is aimed at product managers, program managers, consultants, sales professionals, line-of-business leaders, marketers, and business analysts who evaluate, champion, or scale AI.
Exam Domain Weights
The weights are nearly flat. Strategy and value creation carries a little more (roughly 24 of 85 questions), and each of the other three domains carries roughly 20. You cannot pass by mastering one domain and skimming the rest. This guide follows the official domain order because each domain depends on the one before it: you cannot judge a build-or-buy decision without knowing what RAG and fine-tuning are, and you cannot scale an initiative you have not governed.
