1.2. The AI Business Strategist Role

💡 First Principle: AI initiatives fail when nobody owns the questions that sit between "this technology is possible" and "this business result is real." The AI business strategist owns those questions: which problem is worth solving, whether AI fits, how value will be proven, how much risk is acceptable, and how people will adopt the change. Builders own how the solution works. Clear decision rights on both sides prevent the two most common failures: technology in search of a problem, and business demands that ignore technical reality.

Why does this role need its own certification? Because the people who sponsor and steer AI (product managers, consultants, line-of-business leaders) increasingly decide where millions of dollars go, yet they are often handed technical training that teaches them to build things they will never build. The exam guide is explicit: the target candidate "works alongside technical teams but does not build AI solutions themselves."

Think of a film producer. The producer chooses the story, secures the budget, hires the director, manages the schedule, protects the studio from legal and reputational risk, and decides whether the film is released. The producer does not operate the camera or edit the footage, but a film with a weak producer fails no matter how good the camera work is. The strategist is the producer of AI initiatives.

⚠️ Common Misconception: "An AI strategy starts by choosing a model or technology platform," and "to lead AI initiatives, a business strategist must know how to build and tune models." Strategy starts with the business outcome and works backwards; technology choice comes later. And the strategist's expertise is judgment about value, risk, and adoption, not engineering. Both beliefs push leaders toward the wrong first move.
