5.2. Project Schedule Management

This is the most calculation-heavy content on the CAPM — still entry-level, but the exam tests whether you can recognize how a schedule gets built and how variance gets measured, and without that recognition, scheduling scenario questions become guesswork rather than reasoning. Think of the two subsections below as two separate drawers: one for building the schedule itself (technique), and one for the surrounding management plans that keep the schedule honest (quality and integration) — the ⚠️ Exam Traps in each cover the specific pairs of terms candidates blur together most often.

The connection between the two matters more than it looks at first glance. A schedule change on the critical path — a work package that suddenly doubles in duration — isn't just a scheduling event. It's exactly the kind of change integration management exists to propagate: does the new duration affect the cost baseline? Does it push a quality inspection past its planned window? Building the schedule (5.2.1) and keeping every other plan component consistent with it (5.2.2) are two halves of the same discipline, not two unrelated checklists.
