HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) Study Guide (88 Minute Read)
A First-Principles Approach to Infrastructure as Code
Welcome. This guide is built on a simple bet: if you understand why Terraform behaves the way it does, you will never have to memorize the answer to a question you have never seen before — you will be able to reason it out. Every section starts from a mental model and works toward the details, so the exam objectives become consequences of things you already understand rather than a list of facts to cram.
Official Exam Objectives: Terraform Associate 004 Exam Content List
About the exam. The Terraform Associate (004) launched January 8, 2026, replacing the retired 003 version. It tests Terraform 1.12 and adds emphasis on newer language features: ephemeral values and write-only arguments, custom condition checks, the moved and removed blocks for state refactoring, and expanded HCP Terraform projects and governance. The exam is provider-agnostic — you are tested on Terraform itself, not on AWS, Azure, or GCP specifics.
Format and logistics. Expect roughly 60 questions in a 60-minute, online-proctored exam delivered through Certiverse. Question types are true/false, multiple choice (single answer), and multiple answer (multi-select). Scenario framing is common, but the questions are not designed to trick you. The credential is valid for two years.
⚠️ A note on weights. HashiCorp does not publish official per-objective percentage weights or a passing score for this exam. The chart below shows relative emphasis by objective coverage (share of the 37 official sub-objectives) — a reasonable proxy for where to invest study time, but not an official blueprint weighting.
Exam Domain Emphasis (Relative Coverage)
The two heaviest areas are the core workflow (the commands you run every day) and configuration (the language you write). Together they make up roughly 40% of coverage, so they deserve the most hands-on practice. The remaining objectives are smaller but highly testable — and the newer 1.12 features cluster in configuration and state management.
