GitHub Copilot Certification (GH-300) Study Guide [90 Minute Read]

A First-Principles Approach to AI-Assisted Software Development

Welcome. This guide is built around a simple idea: if you understand why GitHub Copilot behaves the way it does — how it builds a prompt, where its suggestions come from, and what it cannot know — you can reason your way through exam questions you have never seen before. We lead with the mental model first and the definition last, because memorizing feature lists is brittle and the GH-300 rewards judgment.

Official Exam Objectives: Study guide for Exam GH-300: GitHub Copilot

The GH-300 is an intermediate, proctored exam with roughly 60 scored questions (plus a handful of unscored pretest items) in about 100 minutes. A passing score is 700 on Microsoft's scaled 1000-point system. Expect mostly multiple-choice and multi-select items, with a meaningful share of short scenario questions ("a team needs… what should you do?"). Most questions target generally available (GA) features; a few may cover commonly used Preview features.

📝 Currency note (June 2026): The exam blueprint is fixed "as of January 2026." Since then, GitHub moved Copilot from premium-request billing to token-based GitHub AI Credits (effective June 1, 2026) and paused some self-serve sign-ups. The five plan names — Free, Pro, Pro+, Business, Enterprise — are stable, and code completions remain included on paid plans. For the exam, focus on features and responsible use, not volatile pricing figures. This guide flags where the live product has moved past the exam's snapshot.

Exam Domain Weights

One domain dominates: using Copilot's features is more than a quarter of the exam, so the agentic surface (Agent Mode, Edit Mode, MCP, the CLI, code review, org policies) deserves the deepest study. Responsible use is the clear second priority. The remaining four domains are weighted evenly in the 10–15% band, so none can be safely skipped — but spread your time in proportion to the chart above.
