About Cisco CCNA Certification
Cisco's CCNA (exam code 200-301) is the entry-level certification for network engineers. It consolidated several legacy associate-level tracks (Routing & Switching, Wireless, Security) into a single unified exam in February 2020. The credential validates skills across IP connectivity, network access, IP services, security fundamentals, automation, and programmability.
The exam runs 120 minutes and costs USD $300. Most candidates from a help-desk or junior IT background spend 8–16 weeks preparing. Performance-based items appear alongside multiple choice, so hands-on time on real or virtualized Cisco gear (Packet Tracer, CML, GNS3) is essential — passive reading alone will not get you to a pass.
Career outcomes: CCNA is the credential most network technician, junior network administrator, and NOC engineer postings request. It also serves as the gateway to professional-level Cisco tracks (CCNP Enterprise, Security, Collaboration) and is recognized internationally.
What you will study: subnetting and IPv6 addressing, OSPFv2 single-area, EtherChannel, VLANs and trunking, spanning-tree protocol, Wi-Fi security, ACLs, NAT, QoS, REST APIs, configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef), and Cisco DNA Center. The blueprint weights vary — IP connectivity and network access carry the heaviest exam weight.
