First Principle: Effective explainability is human-centered; the explanation must be tailored to the audience and their specific needs, providing the right level of detail to enable understanding, trust, and action.
An explanation that a data scientist understands may be useless to an end user or a regulator.
Key Principles:
- Audience-Aware Explanations: The explanation should be different for different audiences.
- For a Data Scientist: A detailed feature attribution plot (for example, SHAP values) showing the exact influence of each variable.
- For a Doctor: A summary of the key clinical factors the model considered and a confidence score.
- For a Customer (whose loan was denied): A clear, simple reason based on the most important factors (e.g., "based on credit score and debt-to-income ratio").
- Actionable Insights: A good explanation should empower the user to do something. For a customer, it might be advice on how to improve their chances of approval. For a data scientist, it might be a clue on how to debug the model.
- Context is Key: The explanation should be presented within the context of the user's workflow, not as a separate, complex report.
Scenario: A model predicts that a piece of factory equipment is likely to fail. An explanation is generated.
Reflection Question: How would a human-centered design approach change the explanation for a factory floor operator versus a data scientist?
